Spring 2026 Newsletter Update for the Basingstoke Canal Society

Kitty II

The Basingstoke Canal Society has released its Spring 2026 Update, providing members and supporters with important news about current projects, community events and preparations for the organisation’s 60th anniversary. The latest edition of the Basingstoke Canal News (Issue 288) highlights progress across the canal, ongoing volunteer efforts and upcoming activities for the year ahead.

Celebrating Six Decades of Canal Restoration Work

The Spring Update opens with reflections on the Society’s remarkable journey since 1966. Editor Elspeth Levi notes how the organisation began with a simple letter written by Jim Woolgar. That letter, which is featured on the front page of the update, helped inspire the movement that eventually saved the canal. The Society marks its 60th anniversary this year and members, receiving digital newsletters, will also gain access to a downloadable commemorative booklet.

This anniversary year is expected to bring renewed attention to the canal’s heritage. It also creates an opportunity to attract new supporters, volunteers and visitors, strengthening the long term sustainability of the waterway.

Significant Progress on Kitty II

One of the most important developments covered in the Spring 2026 update is the progress on Kitty II, the Society’s new electric trip boat. Construction is now completed as the new boat has been delivered (shown in the image above). Supporting infrastructure is also moving forward. UK Power Networks is scheduled to install a new supply cable and the Society has already taken delivery of new Rolec charging pedestals. These improvements will help create a more sustainable boating experience for visitors. More than £165,000 has been raised for the purchase of Kitty II, thanks to the generosity of its members, volunteers and the wider public across Surrey and Hampshire who enjoy the Canal and value the work the BCS does. This support has played a vital role in bringing their new electric trip boat into service, and boat trips can now be booked at basingstoke-canal.org.uk/book-a-boat-trip. The final £75,000 was secured through a successful Your Fund Surrey grant.

The Spring Update also describes the Society’s positive meeting with Jo East, the recently appointed Canal Manager for the Basingstoke Canal Authority. Discussions included plans for better seating provision along the towpath. Volunteer lengthsmen provided helpful insight into areas where additional benches would benefit walkers and other canal users.

Community Events and Educational Talks

The Spring 2026 edition introduces several upcoming Chobham Talks organised by Neil Barton. Topics include a presentation from the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance service, along with a detailed session on the damselflies and dragonflies that thrive in the canal’s SSSI designated habitat. These talks provide both education and community connection, helping residents and visitors learn more about local wildlife and emergency services.

Supporters are also encouraged to attend the Annual General Meeting, which will take place on Saturday, 2 May 2026. The AGM offers an opportunity to review progress, discuss future goals and celebrate the Society’s achievements as it enters its landmark anniversary year. A printed or digital copy of the commemorative booklet will also accompany this update for members.

A Year of Renewal and Celebration

With major projects underway and an anniversary to celebrate, 2026 is shaping up to be a significant year for the Basingstoke Canal Society. The launch of Kitty II represents progress toward a cleaner and more sustainable environment. Volunteer activity remains strong and plans for new community events continue to grow. The Spring Update captures both the momentum of current work and the excitement that surrounds the Society’s future.
