Shawfield Primary School is set for a full rebuild as part of the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme. The project will deliver a new, modern two‑storey school building on the same general footprint as the existing facilities, with updated learning spaces, improved site layout, new play areas and a multi‑use games area. The new Shawfield Primary School aims to create a future-focused, sustainable learning environment that supports pupils for decades to come while maintaining community involvement throughout the process.
About the School Rebuilding Programme
The School Rebuilding Programme is a long-term national initiative that was announced on 29 June 2020. The Education Secretary described it at the time as a 10-year, multi-wave rebuilding programme intended to replace poor-condition and ageing school buildings with modern, energy-efficient designs.
The programme formally began rolling out projects in 2021. There are currently 519 confirmed projects across England.
The first 100 rebuild projects were announced in two stages in February 2021 and July 2021, and the government subsequently expanded the programme based on nationwide condition data and consultation.
Funding associated with school estate improvements also sits within wider departmental capital budgets. Since 2015, successive governments have allocated more than 17 billion pounds for maintaining and improving school buildings, including capital streams that feed into or operate alongside the rebuilding programme.
New School Will Be Delivered By a Specialist Contractor
The Department for Education has appointed Galliford Try as the contractor to design and build the new Shawfield Primary School. Galliford Try is one of the UK’s leading education construction firms and is part of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, committing to high standards onsite and within the community.
Temporary School Buildings To Support Continuity
During construction, pupils and staff will remain on site. A three-storey temporary school will be installed on the lower playground for approximately 20 months. When construction of the permanent building is complete, the temporary facility will be removed and the playground reinstated.
Additional layout details appear on the programme’s temporary accommodation page, which sets out the proposed teaching block, associated site logistics and the short-term masterplan.
Construction Timeline
Planning approval permitting, work on the new school is expected to begin in Winter 2026. The full construction programme, including landscaping and external areas, is projected to take around 20 months.
Community Consultation Continues
The project team continues to invite comments, questions and feedback from parents, staff and local residents. Information panels, plans and consultation features are available on the redevelopment website.
