Residents in Ash and the surrounding area are being advised that South East Water will introduce temporary hosepipe restrictions from 00:01 on Saturday 25 July.
The restrictions apply to customers across Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey and have been introduced following a prolonged period of hot weather, unusually low rainfall, and increasing pressure on local water resources.
Why are the restrictions being introduced?
According to South East Water, the region has received just 64% of average rainfall since March and has experienced three significant heatwaves. Water levels in the River Thames and local underground aquifers have fallen to levels that require protection to safeguard supplies and the environment.
The temporary restrictions are designed to reduce water demand and help ensure there is enough water available for essential daily needs.
What is not allowed?
Under the hosepipe restrictions, residents must not use a hosepipe or sprinkler to:
- Water gardens or allotments
- Wash private cars, motorcycles, caravans or boats
- Clean patios, paths, driveways or outdoor surfaces
- Fill or maintain swimming pools, paddling pools or hot tubs
- Use pressure washers connected to the mains water supply
What can residents do instead?
South East Water recommends several alternatives to help conserve water:
- Use a watering can instead of a hosepipe
- Water plants early in the morning or late in the evening
- Collect cold water while waiting for taps or showers to warm up
- Reuse suitable greywater from washing-up bowls or baths in the garden
- Sweep patios and driveways rather than washing them down
Why are hosepipes a concern?
A hosepipe can use up to 1,000 litres of water per hour, which is more water than the average person uses in an entire week. South East Water says demand rises significantly during warm weather, with outdoor water use being a major factor.
How long will the restrictions last?
South East Water has stated that the restrictions will remain in place only for as long as necessary. The situation will be reviewed regularly and restrictions will be lifted when water resources recover sufficiently.
