Ash Road Bridge to open 8th February

Ash Road Bridge to open on 8th Feb
Ash Road Bridge is to open at 7 am on Saturday 8th February 2025. Officially named as Chester Bridge, this marks a significant milestone in the Ash Road Bridge project, which aims to enhance road safety and alleviate congestion caused by the existing level crossing. The bridge’s opening to cars and buses marks the commencement of the final phase of the project.
The opening date was originally scheduled for 23rd November 2024, however, this was delayed to ensure that the final administrative details are complete”. On Social Media, Cllr Matt Furnis (Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth) reported that “The Deed of Easement from Network Rail has finally been completed. As this was the final element that was preventing the bridge from opening”.

Impact of Phase 5

Phase Five will begin on Monday, 10 February 2025, and is expected to last approximately nine weeks. Key aspects of this phase include:
  • Closure of the level crossing to motorised traffic
  • Temporary closure of the junction between Ash Church Road and Foreman Road
  • Full-depth reconstruction of Ash Church Road from Britten Close to Foreman Road
  • Temporary diversion of the Number 20 bus route
  • Installation of temporary traffic lights on Foreman Road to facilitate pedestrian access between Woodroffe Close and Meade Walk, with traffic light timings to be reviewed after one week
  • Creation of new parking spaces on Guildford Road between the Dover’s Arms roundabout and the level crossing
Vehicular Diversion for Cars and Buses only

Pedestrian and Cycle Access

Pedestrian and cyclist access to the railway station will remain open throughout Phase Five, with a signed diversion in place between Grange Road and Ash Church Road. Additionally, pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross the railway at the level crossing.

Bus Routes

During this period, cars, light vehicles, and the Number 20 bus will be redirected from Ash Street via Grange Road, Foreman Road, over the new bridge, and along Leyscroftes Road and Stonehill Road, rejoining Guildford Road at the Dover’s Arms roundabout.

The bus stops at St Peter’s Church, Ash Rail Station, and Chester Road will be temporarily out of service during Phase Five. Once completed, the Number 20 bus will permanently use Chester Bridge, Leyscroftes Road, and Stonehill Road as its route.

HGV Diversion

Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) are advised to take a longer diversion from the A331 along the A31 and A3, returning to Ash via the A323 to minimise heavy traffic on narrower roads. HGVs will be permitted to use the bridge once Phase Five concludes in approximately nine weeks.
