Who can you vote for on Thursday 7th May

Polling Station
On Thursday 7th May 2026, local elections will be held across West Surrey to elect councillors to the new West Surrey Council. These elections will help shape how local services are delivered and how communities are represented in the years ahead. They give residents the chance to choose who will represent their area and speak on their behalf at council level. Whether you live in the Ash Ward or the Shalford Ward, your vote plays an important role in local decision‑making. Make sure you know which ward you are in and take time to review the candidates standing in your area before polling day.

Local Elections in Ash: How It Works

Electoral wards determine which candidates appear on your ballot paper. In Ash, the parish is split between two West Surrey Council wards:

  • Ash Ward
  • Shalford Ward

Your registered address decides which ward you are in, and therefore which candidates you can vote for on election day.

The Ash Ward

The Ash Ward covers the majority of Ash Parish, this includes:

  • All of Ash Vale
  • Large parts of Ash village itself, referred to electorally as Ash Wharf
  • Parts of  Ash South

Residents in this ward will receive a ballot paper listing the candidates standing for the Ash ward of West Surrey Council. Check your polling card or electoral registration details to be certain.

The Shalford Ward

The Shalford ward covers a much wider area. Locally, this includes:

  • All of Ash Green
  • Parts of Ash South

Although these areas are within Ash Parish, they are represented at West Surrey Council level as part of the Shalford ward. Voters here will see a different set of candidates on their ballot paper compared with those in the Ash ward.

Why Wards Matter When You Vote

Each ward elects councillors separately. This means:

  • You can only vote for candidates standing in your ward
  • Election results are declared by ward, not by parish

Knowing your ward ensures you are informed about the candidates who want to represent your local area on West Surrey Council.

How to Find Out Which Ward You’re In

To confirm whether you are in the Ash or Shalford ward, you can:

  • Check your polling card, which will state your ward
  • Look up your address on the electoral register
  • Contact your local council’s electoral services team guildford.gov.uk/wardboundaries

Doing this ahead of Thursday 7 May will help avoid confusion on polling day.

When and How to Vote

  • Election Day: Thursday 7 May 2026
  • Polling stations: Open from 7 am to 10 pm
  • Voters must be registered and bring valid voter ID
