GBC Starts Work on The Briars New Playground

GBC Starts work on The Briars New Playground

Guildford Borough Council (GBC) has started work to enhance its playground at The Briars in south Ash. The build of the new playground is expected to take approximal 8 weeks. More information on the new park design can be found on the GBC website https://guildford.gov.uk/Briars.

This initiative is part of the council’s commitment to maintaining a family-friendly and green environment, funded through local development contributions and part-funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The council recently sought public input on the proposed new design for the playground. From October 12 to November 10, 2024, residents were invited to share their feedback through an online survey. The consultation proposed “Safari Adventure” design, with updated play equipment and a new layout.

Consultation Findings

GBC reported that 80% of respondents expressed support for the proposed design. However, some raised concerns about specific aspects, including:

  • The number of swings available.
  • Accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
  • Seating arrangements.
  • The preference for timber and natural materials over metal finishes.

Swings and Play Equipment

The proposed playground includes a variety of swinging options to cater to different age groups and abilities:

  1. Toddler swings: Featuring two seats, including a multi-generational swing suitable for adults and children.
  2. Toddler/junior basket swing: A wide, accessible swing designed for smaller children and those with mobility issues.
  3. Multi-unit swings: Equipped with both flat and backed seats for users aged 3+ to adults.
  4. Large nest swing: Suitable for juniors, teens, and adults.
  5. Hammock: Offers a gentle, informal swinging motion.
  6. ‘Viper’ swing: A dynamic rope swing for a gliding experience.
  7. ‘Titan’ swing unit: Features multiple seating options, including back-supported and overhead gliding options, with the entire unit offering rotational movement.

Accessibility Features

The Council has prioritised inclusivity in the playground’s design, incorporating features to ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities:

  • A tarmac pathway from The Briars will provide wheelchair and pram access.
  • Most equipment is accessible via hardstanding surfaces.
  • Inclusive elements include a ground-level rotating roundabout for wheelchair users, sensory and tactile play panels, sound-play equipment like bongo drums, and accessible stairs with handrails.
  • The double-width slide and enclosed toddler area offer added safety and inclusivity.

Seating and Materials

While the design includes three benches, feedback led to the addition of an extra bench outside the fenced play area. However, GBC said that picnic benches have been excluded to minimise the risk of anti-social behaviour, a concern shared by local residents.

Although some respondents favoured timber materials, GBC opted for metal finishes due to their durability, cost-effectiveness, and resistance to vandalism. Green tones and natural landscaping, including six trees and wildflower planting, will help integrate the playground into its surroundings.

Addressing Other Concerns

Some respondents suggested adding a zip wire, but GBC deemed this impractical due to its high cost, space requirements, and limited capacity for single users. Instead, the design offers alternatives like the ‘Viper’ and ‘Titan’ swings, which offer similar experiences while accommodating multiple users.

What’s Next?

GBC have advised that the construction on the new playground is scheduled to begin on December 9, 2024, and is expected to take approximately eight weeks, weather permitting. The revamped play area is anticipated to open in early spring 2025, providing a fun and inclusive space for families to enjoy.
