New book – Bridges of the Canal

When The Basingstoke Canal opened in 1794, there were originally 68 bridges in all, comprising 56 brick bridges and 12 wooden bridges. Over the last 230 years there have been at least 169 bridges at 99 different locations.

There are 75 bridges in existence today, ranging from the many original red brick accommodation bridges to the most recent modern bridges, but many have
disappeared. This book tells the story of them all!

All profits from this book will be donated to The Basingstoke Canal Society. The book is a hardback a little larger than A5, printed on high quality coated silk paper. It contains approximately 280 pages along with 126 photos of current and former bridges.

Ian Moore, Chairman, The Basingstoke Canal Society,

“A fascinating read for students of history and plugs a gap in our knowledge of the canal infrastructure. Peter must be commended on his research”
