What are the Tongham enhancements?

What are the Tongham enhancements

Work has begun on the Tongham Road enhancements. The works include a 2-week road closure of Oxenden Road and The Street. Surrey County Council (SCC) will place diversion route signs during these closures, which are in operation 24/7. The work is split into two phases.

Phase one: works information

Works to improve road safety on Oxenden Road and The Street will begin on Monday 9 October. The works on Oxenden Road include construction of a speed cushion and kerb buildout and the works on The Street include construction of three speed tables, improvements to the pedestrian crossing adjacent to Manor House Flats, and installation of no parking signage.

Due to the type of works being constructed The Street will be closed from Monday 9 October for approximately 2 weeks, 24 hours a day.

Oxenden Road will be closed from Monday 23 October for 5 days, the road will be closed overnight at the same time. There will be a signed diversion route in place at all times during the closures. Buses serving Oxenden Road will follow an alternative route during these works and bus stop suspensions will be in place from 23 to 27 October.

Access for residents living on The Street and Oxenden Road will be maintained when safe to do so. Please talk to a member of staff on site if you need help, talking to staff can solve most issues.

Phase two: changes to The Street junction and creation of a pocket park in Tongham

Proposed improvements:

  • Creating an area of green space with seating for public use (pocket park) on the grassed area to the north of the Nisa Local store
  • New planting, sustainable drainage systems (rain gardens) with seating and additional cycle stands on The Street
  • Introduction of a raised junction between Grange Road, The Street, and Poyle Road with an uncontrolled crossing point.
  • A priority give-way system on Poyle Road to highlight to vehicles that they are entering a village environment and encourage slower and safer driving.

This phase of the scheme is being designed in line with feedback received from engagement with residents last year.

Background

In 2022 Surrey County Council shared proposals to improve road safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and better utilise green space in Tongham. Since the initial engagement, plans have been developed to deliver the scheme. To see information about the earlier engagement, visit the Ash and Tongham enhancements commonplace site.

The scheme will be carried out in two phases described above. The plans developed at this stage are for the first phase of the improvements. The final plans are still being developed for phase two of the scheme, SCC will share further updates once we have these.
