SCC has advised that to be suitable for an EV charge point, locations should be:
- where an electric vehicle can park legally and safely, with sufficient pavement space for wheelchairs and pushchairs to pass comfortably,
- with nearby access to a power supply – we realise this is difficult to know, but with no access to a power supply an otherwise preferred location might not be possible due to power supply issues
- Chargepoints would normally be standalone equipment, however, lighting columns located at the pavement edge nearest to the road might also be possible
These suggestions will be used over the coming years to inform the selection of locations for the wider roll-out across the county, ensuring there is a comprehensive network of charge points for residents without their own charge points. SCC has a target to be net-zero carbon by 2050, and currently, 41 per cent of emissions come from transport.
Providing a comprehensive network of publicly accessible charge points is essential for supporting residents who don’t have their own off-street parking in their transition to electric vehicles and helping the county achieve its goal. As more people switch to electric vehicles it is estimated that the county will need 10,000 electric vehicle charge points by 2030, when the government’s ban on sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles comes into effect.
Surrey County Council has nearly completed the installation of the first 80 charge points in Guildford, Spelthorne, Waverley and Woking boroughs as part of a trial funded by the Enterprise M3 LEP and the local borough councils. Matt Furniss, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Infrastructure and Economy said:
“Surrey County Council has a role to ensure charge points are installed in the right locations so we can achieve a comprehensive network that meets the needs of Surrey residents.”
“Electric vehicles offer an excellent opportunity to help the county on a pathway towards the net-zero carbon vision. 40% of households don’t have off-street parking, so the provision of further on-street charging infrastructure will ensure charging electric vehicles is accessible to more of our residents.”
Funding for on-street EV charging
Surrey County Council has recently secured £482,250 to fund the installation of a further 110 on-street electric vehicle charge points. The charge points will be installed across six Surrey boroughs supported by the On-street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS). The new charge points will be targeted at residential areas with limited off-street parking including:
- Waverley – Hindhead, Godalming and Farnham
- Woking – West Byfleet, Knaphill and Woking
- Spelthorne – Staines and Shepperton
- Guildford – Central Guildford
- Runnymede – Chertsey, Virginia Water, Egham and Addlestone
- Mole Valley – Leatherhead, Dorking and North Holmwood
