Basingstoke Canal Society Newsletter – Summer 2025 Edition

Basingstoke Canal Society (BCS)

The latest Summer 2025 edition of the Basingstoke Canal News highlights significant developments and challenges faced by the Basingstoke Canal Society (BCS). The AGM, held on May 10, 2025, was well-attended, with over 50 members present. Key discussions included the Society’s financial health, with a healthy bank balance reported, although significant expenses are anticipated for upcoming projects.

The newsletter pays tribute to notable figures in the community, including David Gerry, a founding member of the Surrey & Hants Canal Society, and Pablo and Jill Haworth, who recently passed away. Their contributions to the canal’s restoration and preservation are fondly remembered.

In terms of activities, the Society is actively engaging with local businesses to raise funds and sponsorship for future projects. The archives team is making progress in documenting the Society’s history, with plans to transfer the archives to the Surrey History Centre by Autumn 2026.

The newsletter also addresses recent incidents of anti-social behaviour along the canal, urging the community to report any wildlife harm to the authorities. On a positive note, it celebrates the remarkable achievement of Sarah Horton, who raised approximately £700 for the Society by walking over 100 miles in just 33 hours.

Upcoming events include various local festivals and a calendar competition, encouraging members to submit their photographs for the 2026 calendar. The Society continues to welcome new members, with a notable increase in membership reported.

For more details, members are encouraged to visit the Basingstoke Canal Society’s website and participate in the upcoming events to support the canal’s ongoing preservation efforts.
