One of Hampshire’s most popular community events is back this autumn as the 7th Odiham Raft Race takes place on Sunday 6 September 2026 at Odiham Wharf on the beautiful Basingstoke Canal.
Starting from 12.30 pm, the event promises an afternoon packed with entertainment, friendly competition, and plenty of laughter as teams take to the water aboard their own homemade rafts.
Build a Raft and Take on the Challenge
Teams of six people are invited to design and build their own raft before competing in a race along the canal. Whether your craft is built for speed or designed to stand out from the crowd, imagination and teamwork are all part of the fun.
Entry is completely free, but places are limited. The Basingstoke Canal is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and, to help protect the local wildlife and environment, only 15 teams can take part. Organisers are encouraging teams to register early to avoid disappointment.
For those who sign up in advance, organisers will also be sharing ideas and inspiration from previous winning rafts.
A Fantastic Day for Spectators
You do not need to be racing to enjoy the day. Visitors can gather along the wharf and towpath to cheer on competitors as they paddle, splash and occasionally wobble their way around the course.
The raft race has become well known for its colourful creations, community atmosphere and family-friendly entertainment. Teams will also take part in the traditional tug of war, adding even more excitement to the afternoon.
Supporting the Basingstoke Canal
While the event is independently organised, volunteers from the Basingstoke Canal Society will once again be supporting the day. The Society is also one of the beneficiaries of the funds raised through the event, helping to support the ongoing care and promotion of the canal.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to purchase the Basingstoke Canal Society’s 2027 Calendar, which will be launched at the event. Featuring some of the finest photographs submitted to the Society’s annual competition, the calendar is a regular sell-out and early buyers will have the chance to secure their copy on the day.
