Surrey residents urged to be wildfire aware
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is asking residents and visitors to help reduce the risk of wildfires during periods of hot and dry weather.
In 2025, crews attended 1,036 fires in the open across Surrey. So far this year, there have already been 679 fires in the open, showing why simple prevention steps are so important.
Wildfires can spread quickly, destroy wildlife habitats, endanger animals and people, and take days to bring under control. Common causes include disposable BBQs, campfires, bonfires, litter, cigarettes and deliberate fire-setting.
How you can help prevent wildfires
Everyone can help keep Surrey’s commons, countryside and open spaces safe by following simple advice when spending time outdoors.
- Swap disposable BBQs for picnics when visiting commons, parks or countryside sites.
- Avoid campfires, bonfires and burning garden waste during hot, dry weather.
- Take litter home, especially glass bottles and other items that could increase fire risk.
- Keep cigarettes and smoking materials out of dry grass and dispose of them safely.
- If you are having a BBQ at home, keep it away from sheds, fences, bushes and dry vegetation, and keep water nearby.
What to do if you see a fire
If you see an active fire, call 999 immediately and ask for the fire service. Do not attempt to tackle the fire yourself.
